The Sustainable Fashion Guide: How to Build a Wardrobe That Lasts

Fast fashion accounts for 10% of global carbon emissions. Here is how to build a conscious wardrobe without sacrificing style — starting with the fabrics you choose.

Fashion is one of the world's most resource-intensive industries. From the cotton fields of Gujarat to the spinning mills of Tamil Nadu, every garment carries a footprint. At Akaayu, we believe the answer is not about guilt — it is about making smarter choices, one piece at a time.

Start With Fabric

The single biggest factor in a garment's environmental impact is its material. Natural fibres like organic cotton, linen, and Tencel biodegrade at end of life and require fewer chemical finishes during production. Georgette and poly-crepe blends — the fabrics we use most at Akaayu — are chosen for their durability: a top that holds its shape after fifty washes replaces three that do not.

When reading labels, look for GSM (grams per square metre). Higher GSM generally means denser, longer-lasting fabric. Our georgette pieces sit at 80–100 GSM — light enough for Indian summers, sturdy enough for years of wear.

The Cost-Per-Wear Formula

A garment that costs ₹2,500 and gets worn 100 times has a cost-per-wear of ₹25. A ₹500 fast-fashion dress worn five times before it pills costs ₹100 per wear — four times more. Before adding anything to your cart, ask yourself: will I still reach for this in two years?

This is the philosophy behind our pricing. Every Akaayu piece is designed to be a long-term companion in your wardrobe, not a one-season experiment.

Care Extends Life

How you wash matters as much as what you buy. Cold water preserves colour and fibre integrity. Air-drying prevents the micro-damage that tumble dryers cause. Steaming instead of ironing is gentler on delicate fabrics like chiffon and georgette.

For our off-shoulder tops and maxi dresses, we recommend hand-washing in cold water with a mild detergent. Lay flat to dry, and they will look new for far longer than the care label promises.

Build a Capsule, Not a Collection

The most sustainable wardrobe is a small one. Thirty versatile pieces that mix and match will take you further than a hundred trendy items. Start with neutral basics — a black georgette top, an off-white maxi — then layer in colour and print as accents.

At Akaayu, every collection is designed with this in mind: pieces that complement each other and stand alone.
